The Lucas Group is partnering with Mad About Plants, a well-established wholesale production nursery, to appoint a Nursery Manager to lead operations in Cairns.

Operating on a 16-acre site just outside Cairns, Mad About Plants has been supplying high-quality tropical plants to the landscape trade, wholesale nurseries and major retailers since 1998.

The Opportunity
As Nursery Manager, you’ll have day-to-day responsibility for running the nursery playing a key role in its future direction, including the streamlining and automation of a number of internal functions .You’ll lead a dedicated team, oversee plant production and quality, and have the autonomy to improve systems, build capability, and drive efficiency.

This role suits someone who enjoys being on the ground, leading from the front, and taking pride in producing high-quality plants at scale.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Leading all nursery operations across production, inventory and workflow
  • Building, mentoring and motivating the nursery team
  • Maintaining exceptional plant quality and consistency
  • Ensuring safe, compliant and environmentally responsible operations
  • Working closely with customers to support ongoing growth
  • Identifying and implementing improvements across the nursery

About You
You are a confident, grounded leader with a strong background in nursery or horticultural operations. You enjoy working closely with people, communicating clearly, and leading change in a practical, respectful way. You value teamwork, accountability and quality, and you’re motivated by the opportunity to shape how a well-established business evolves.

Skills & Experience
  • Proven experience leading teams in a nursery or horticultural environment
  • Qualification in Horticulture or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Solid understanding of plant production, irrigation and nursery systems – tropical plant knowledge would be appreciated but it is not essential
  • Experience with agricultural chemicals (preferred)
  • Current driver’s licence (MR or HR advantageous)
