This property covers 10,000 hectares of grazing land in the mid-South East of South Australia. It currently runs a self-replacing Angus herd of approximately 2000 breeders. The majority of heifers are retained, and Steers are targeted at the feedlot market. 7000 merino ewes are joined, 50% to terminal sire with these lambs sold as stores or finished on irrigation. The company takes pride in its quality livestock grazing enterprise, with ZQ-accredited Merino sheep and EU-accredited cattle.
About The Role
You will be working directly with the sheep and the cattle managers, on day-to-day operations, primarily focussing on grazing management and animal husbandry, including confinement feeding and body scoring to optimise animal health. Previous sheep and cattle experience will be highly regarded A practical approach to stock handling and mechanical aptitude for general farm maintenance and machinery operation will be highly regarded.
In this role, you will
- Learn and develop lifetime ewe management and grazing-for-profit management techniques.
- Assist with all core animal husbandry tasks.
- Monitor pastures to plan stock rotations and feed budgets.
- Maintain farm machinery and water infrastructure.
- Keep farm infrastructure in good order to maintain the property's presentation.
- Operate farm machinery, particularly for fodder production and in containment feeding scenarios
- Uphold a safe working environment.
Not essential but highly sought are are:
- Experience with sheep and cattle.
- A working dog for sheep with experience
- A "can-do" attitude.
- Experience with livestock husbandry, nutrition, drenches, and vaccination.
- The ability to work autonomously and within a team.
- Willingness to learn and improve.
- The role requires hands-on experience.
